Product Appeal of Bedhead Hats
As a parent, I am aware of the harmful effects UV rays can have on the delicate skin of babes, and protecting my children from sun exposure when we are outside is one of my top priorities.
Living in Australia, it’s typical to spend many of our days outside, particularly in the summer. Visits to the playgrounds, trips to the pool, holidays to the beach should be a pleasant experience. But, many of us would have stories to share of a time when we took home a sunburn as our holiday souvenir.
The Cancer Council advises some of the best ways to stay protected is to wear a hat, provide shade, cover-up as much as possible and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Finding kids hats can be difficult, which is why I partnered with Bedhead Hats to review their products, which you can read about below.
Childrens Sun Hats Australia Buying Guide
Before buying a sun hat for a child, there are several key features you need to consider before buying:
FABRIC: If you are going to be spending a day in the water, the hat should be made of water and chlorine-resistant materials. On the flip side, if you are spending a day in the outdoors away from water, little explorers need a hat made from breathable fabric, so they don’t overheat.
UPF RATING: A high UPF rating is essential for any clothing or hats that are going to be exposed to the harmful rays of the sun for long periods.
DESIGN: The style of a hat is fundamental, as it needs to be comfortable to wear during the day while offering adequate sun protection.

DESIGN
The Bedhead hat company has four different styles of hats, including a baby legionnaire hat, which means even your youngest member of the family can enjoy the outdoors.
Baby Legionnaire | The legionnaire hat is suited to babies, as the back of the hat is a flap that sits against the baby’s neck while in the pram or lying down.
Bucket Hats | The kid’s bucket hats are suited to those children on the move as the brim curves its way around the head.
Swim Hats | The Bedhead kids swim hats can be purchased in either the legionnaire (baby swim hat) or bucket-style (toddler swim hat and kids swim hat).
Heritage Hats | The Heritage hats are an exclusive range and include all the loved features with a few slight differences. Ruffles, intricate stitching, and a natural palette are some of the aesthetic differences. In contrast, the design difference is an elastic band in the crown of the hat, slightly less stretch in the fabric and a wide brim instead of the bucket shape.
Brim Width: The wide brim between 6-7cm (depending on style) is ideal for adequate shade coverage.
Added Design Extras
It can be challenging to keep hats on little heads, so to help with this struggle, Bedhead Hats come with a chin strap that can be removed if you wish.
With some designs, there is a discreet ponytail keyhole to help with keeping the kids cool and hair off their necks.
The Bedhead swim hats are made from a 100% PBT Nylon stretch knit, chlorine-resistant fabric, making them the best type of hat to wear at the beach, pool, or with any water activities.
All of the kids, toddlers, and baby sun hats are made from 90% Cotton and 10% Elastane jersey, giving them ample stretch for a comfortable fit.
The exclusion to this is the new Heritage collection which is made from soft woven cotton fabric with slightly less Elastane (3%).
All the Bedhead Hats have a UPF rating of 50+, placing them in the high protection category.
Bedhead Hats are continually creating beautiful on-trend prints for their range, including summer and winter prints. The only problem will be choosing one as there is an abundance of lovely designs for both boys and girls.
Sizing Guide
Bedhead Hats come in multiple sizes, starting at the head size of 37cm for babies and ranging to 58cm for older children. Some of the designs can be more generous than others, and there is a size advice section available under each hat to ensure you choose the right fit for your child.
When you are ready to purchase the size options tab will offer the different sizes available, plus an age, e.g., 52cm / 2-3 years / L.
It is recommended to measure the size of the child’s head first, check the size advice on the website, and purchase based on the measurements instead of their age. I received the correct sizes when I followed this process.

Anti-Flop Brim
One of the features the Bedhead swim hats promote is a unique anti-flop brim. Anyone who has purchased swim hats in the past will know the brim is the first part of the hat to change shape. Washing and everyday wearing can lead to the brim falling in front of the children’s eyes, which doesn’t help with sun protection or allow the kids to enjoy their activity.
The Bedhead Hats brim is a fantastic addition, and after a full summer, the brim on our swim hats are still holding strong.
Storage
The Bedhead Hats are a popular choice for a child’s hat due to their ability to hold their shape, while still being folded and packed away, making them perfect childcare or travel hats.
Bedhead Hat Review Summary
100% Australian owned all the Bedhead Hats have been tested following Australian and New Zealand standards and have achieved a rating of UPF 50+. The sun protection rating plus their wide range of designs, styles, and colours make them one of the best children’s hats on the market.
