Are you travelling to the Gold Coast and wondering where to stay and what is the best Gold Coast accommodation for kids? In this article, I’ve rounded up the very best Gold Coast accommodation for families to help you decide.
Located in the south-east corner of Queensland the Gold Coast has outgrown its reputation of the glitter strip on the beach to a diverse haven for holidaymakers. Its diversity from golden sandy beaches to the lush tropical hinterland is what draws around 13 million visitors per year from all parts of Australia.
An undeniable attraction of the Gold Coast is the glorious weather that you can experience year-round. The balmy temperatures mean you can spend more time outside basking in the outdoors, which is also where you will find many of the fabulous family activities and attractions.
If you landed on this page hoping to find family accommodation on the Gold Coast then you’re in the right place! Hotels, serviced apartments, rental homes, resorts, caravan and holiday parks – the types of accommodation are endless. With many choices, the task of selecting where to stay can become time-consuming and stressful, which is why I have created this list.

Where to Stay on the Gold Coast: The Best Areas
For a complete Gold Coast experience, I would highly recommend staying in a hotel or resort. When searching for accommodation the Gold Coast has many neighbourhoods and choosing the best one is dependant on what you plan to see and do in the city.
If you have a preferred location and budget, you will be sure to find something on the Gold Coast to suit your needs.
Here is a breakdown of the popular neighbourhoods on the Gold Coast.
Surfers Paradise
Surfers Paradise is possibly the most recognised location on the Gold Coast if not in Queensland. A hot spot on the Gold Coast since the early 1900s the beachside location is where you will find many popular tourist attractions, places to eat and an enthusiastic social scene. This is also the reason why you will find an enormous amount of accommodation options from Gold Coast accommodation apartments to luxurious hotels. I have included many options for family accommodation in Surfers Paradise below.
The new foreshore that runs parallel to the beach is a brilliant place for a walk or scooter ride. While every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday the strip is transformed between 3.00 pm and 8.00 pm for the Surfers Paradise beach markets.
Broadbeach
Broadbeach or “Broadie” as it is affectionately known by locals is only 10-minutes south of Surfers Paradise and fast becoming the place to stay due to its location. Kurrawa Beach is a popular drawcard for families as it is framed by large green parks and close to children’s playgrounds.
The Broadbeach Mall has speciality stores along with casual dining, or take the short trip to Pacific Fair – Australia’s largest retail centre for some serious shopping, or to visit the cinemas.
Main Beach
Located at the northern end along the Gold Coast Broadwater is where you will find some of the Gold Coast’s luxurious accommodation options. Visit Marina Mirage the areas exclusive shopping centre filled with boutique outlets and modern restaurants and cafes.
Further north is the iconic theme park Sea World, and if a barbeque by the Broadwater is beckoning at the end of Sea World Drive is the Southport Spit.
Mermaid Beach
Mermaid Beach is the quieter suburb compared to its next-door neighbour – Broadbeach. Primarily a residential neighbourhood, home to the exclusive millionaires’ row (Hedges Avenue) you will not go hungry when you are staying in Mermaid Beach with an array of dining options and many different cuisines to tantalise all taste buds.
There are numerous accommodation options in the area including resorts, apartments and caravan parks.
Coolangatta
The Gold Coast’s most southern suburb is a popular beachside location with Greenmount, Snapper Rocks, and Rainbow Bay not only offering world-class surfing conditions but ideal swimming areas.
Coolangatta is a favourite location with families with lots of green spaces, walking trails and playgrounds dotted along the beachfront.

Accommodation Features to Consider
What’s important to you when looking for the perfect family accommodation?
Features to consider are:
Price: Do you have a budget?
Your accommodation is normally going to be one of the top two expensive parts of your trip (the other being flights if required). Before you start searching for accommodation, know your budget. This may, in turn, narrow down your options and avoid you spending more than you want.
Rooms – How many guests are travelling and how many rooms do you require?
Many properties can accommodate two adults and two children (sharing existing bedding and under a certain age) within one room. This is going to be the less expensive option; however, I urge you to think about how comfortable you will be during your stay, and this will depend a lot on the ages of your children and your duration of stay.
Facilities – How much time will you be spending at the hotel or resort?
The star rating can be used as a guide to the properties cleanliness, quality, and guest facilities. Four and five-star ratings mean a property has a wide range of facilities and superior guest service.
Location – Will you have a mode of transport with you?
Location is very important when you are looking for a place of accommodation. If you won’t have a vehicle during your trip than public transport can be an additional cost that you will need to consider and something you need to plan around each day. Bare this in mind as you may feel the decision to stay somewhere central beneficial.
Dining – Are you foodies?
Do you like to dine out, eat on the run or prepare a home-cooked meal? Either way, research the dining options in the area where you will be staying.
Which Booking Engine to Use for Gold Coast Accommodation
I have included links in this article to Booking.com as they are one of the most well-known holiday sites where you can book accommodation online and they are a brand that I trust.
There are many more booking engines available to compare accommodation prices, but with a background in hotel reservations and many years of travel experience under my belt, my suggestion is to stick to one or two.
I have chosen this company as I have booked accommodation through them before. Their system is user-friendly, they provide guest reviews, and the rates, inclusions and cancellation policy is clear.
