If you plan a self-guided trip you will need to board the ferry to Bruny Island. The ferry departs daily from Kettering, which will take you approximately 30 – 40 minutes by car from Hobart. As there is no public transport, Taxi or Uber service on the island taking your vehicle onboard is the way to explore. It takes approximately 15 minutes to travel across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel from Kettering to Bruny Island.
There are a few important details to keep in mind when travelling to Bruny Island including ferry times and costs. I have included these resources below so you can guarantee a smooth and efficient trip.
Bruny Island Ferry Times
The SeaLink Bruny Island Ferry service operates 365 days a year. No bookings are available and the service runs on a queueing system. For this reason, it is worth arriving earlier than the time you would like to board.
The ferry service starts at 6.10 am from Kettering (Monday- Friday) and 6.30 am (Saturday and Sunday). The last ferry service from Bruny Island is at 7.15 pm (Monday – Friday) and 7.00 pm (Saturday and Sunday).
Bruny Island Ferry Timetable
Times are subject to change and I recommend downloading the Bruny Island Ferry Timetable from SeaLink to view all times.
Important Note: If you plan on visiting for the day, allow extra time during peak periods for ferry queues at both ends. The vehicles board in the order they arrive at the service points and you don’t want to miss your return trip.
Bruny Island Ferry Cost
You can choose to purchase your tickets online or pay at the ticket booth when you arrive. All fares include the driver and passengers. A return trip for a vehicle under 6 metres is $50.60 (subject to change). The Neck Bruny Island
The Neck is a narrow isthmus that connects North and South Bruny Island. It is possibly one of the most recognisable locations in Tasmania and a must-see during your visit.
Upon arriving at The Neck, you’ll find a designated parking area. There are 279 wooden stairs to reach Truganini Lookout, but it is worth the effort. Once at the top, a 360-degree panoramic vista awaits. This is also the best vantage point to capture the Tasman Sea on one side and the serene D’Entrecasteaux Channel on the other.
At these heights keep your eyes open for the birdlife in the area including short-tailed shearwaters, (also known as muttonbirds), white-bellied sea eagles, and silver gulls.
Cape Bruny Lighthouse
Perched majestically atop towering cliffs is the Cape Bruny Lighthouse – Australia’s second oldest lighthouse. Visiting this iconic landmark on Bruny Island promises not only a fantastic opportunity for stunning photographs but also a fascinating journey into Tasmania’s rich maritime heritage.
Start your journey by driving to the most southern point on the island within South Bruny National Park. Upon arrival, there is parking at the base of the Bruny Island lighthouse.
Once you reach the lighthouse, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Southern Ocean, Storm Bay, and the rugged cliffs that define Bruny Island. For a close-up of the lighthouse and a higher perspective take a guided tour up the iconic spiral staircase and immerse yourself in the tales of shipwrecks, convict life and lighthouse duties.
